CV advice
Employers receive many CVs in one day and badly presented CVs make it harder for them to read. Spending some time and thought in your CV preparation will result in rewarding you with interviews. Ideally your CV will be 2 A4 pages long, so be as concise as possible with your job descriptions. Longer career histories may make your CV run to 3 pages but you should always put all your jobs down leaving no gaps in your employment history.
Try to use bullet points for your job description and throughout the CV. This makes the CV look more organised and is clearer to read. Double check your spelling and grammar as lawyers are expert proof readers and mistakes will be noticed.
A typical CV should have the following headings:
Personal details: Include your Name, address, phone numbers and email, your date of birth and Nationality
Profile: Give a brief description highlighting your key skills and experience, what you are looking for and why you would be good for that role
Computer skills: List all the software packages you have used and your competency level and think back to previous jobs and what you used there. (For IT positions list hardware too)
Education and qualifications: List schools, colleges and universities attended with dates of attendance, qualifications gained and pass marks under each. For those with an LPC please list your electives chosen. Also list any employment training and CPD which is relevant to your job search.
Put here any language skills, typing speeds, membership of relevant Bodies, such as Panel Membership, ILEX Fellowship, date of admission as a solicitor etc.
Career history: List in chronological order all of the jobs you have had starting with your most recent position. Put a heading with the date of the job, job title and the company name and address. Underneath that bullet point your duties in that job giving a practical overview of your day to day workload.
Hobbies: List here your current interests and remember these will show an employer your fitness, socialability and team attitude.
Referees: Please list 2 employer referees who have given permission to be approached for a reference.
