VISA REQUIREMENTS AND WORK PERMITS
EAA nationals can work in the UK without restrictions.  European Community law grants Nationals from the following EEA nations the right to live and work in the UK without obtaining a work permit:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Liechtenstein
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden

From 1st June 2002 the same rights have been granted to citizens of Switzerland.
On 1st May 2004 the EEA was enlarged to include the following states:

  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic*
  • Estonia*
  • Hungary*
  • Latvia*
  • Lithuania*
  • Malta
  • Poland*
  • Slovakia*
  • Slovenia*
Citizens from these countries are now free to come and work within the UK but those from countries marked with an asterisk in the list above are subject to a Home Office Workers Registration Scheme to monitor the participation in the UK labour market of workers from those countries.
If you live outside the European Economic Area (EEA), in order to work in the UK, you will need a valid work permit.

The following British Overseas Territories Citizens are not subject to UK immigration control (but must have a British passport endorsed British Citizen):

  • Anguilla
  • Falkland Islands
  • Ducie and Oeno Islands
  • Bermuda
  • Gibraltar
  • St Helena and Dependencies
  • British Indian Ocean Territory
  • British Antarctic Territory
  • Montserrat
  • South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
  • The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
  • Pitcairn
  • Turks & Caicos Islands
  • Cayman Islands
  • Henderson
  • Virgin

Documents required on registration with TORS:

We will require to see 1 Document from the following list, this will be checked against the original and copied:

  • A Passport showing the holder is a British Citizen or has a right of abode in the UK.
  • Document showing the holder is a national of a EEA country such as a National passport or national identity card.
  • Residence permit issued by the Home Office to a national from EEA country.
  • Passport or other document issued by the Home Office which has an endorsement stating that the holder has a current right of residence in the UK as the family member of a national from an EAA country who is resident in the UK.
  • Passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder can stay indefinitely in the UK or has no time limit on their stay.
  • Passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder can stay in the UK and that this endorsement allows the holder to do the type of work you are offering if they do not have a work permit.
  • An application Registration Card issued by the Home Office to an asylum seeker stating that the holder is permitted to take employment
OR

We need 2 Documents from the following list, which will be checked and copied:
First combination:
  • A document giving the person’s permanent NI No. and name such as a P45, P60, NI card or letter from a Government agency AND as well as above check and copy one of the following
  • Full birth certificate issued in the UK which includes the names of the holder’s parents; OR
  • A birth certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland; OR
  • A certificate of registration or naturalisation stating that the holder is a British citizen; OR
  • A letter issued by the Home Office to the holder which indicates that the person named in it can stay indefinitely in the UK or has no time limit on their stay; OR
  • An Immigration Status Document issued by the Home Office to the holder with an endorsement indicating that the person named in it can stay indefinitely in the UK or has no time limit on their stay; OR
  • A letter issued by the Home Office to the holder which indicates that the person named in it can stay in the UK and this allows them to do the type of work you are offering; OR
  • An Immigration Status Document issued by the Home Office to the holder with an endorsement indicating that the person named in it can stay in the UK and this allows them to do the type of work you are offering
Second combination
  • A work permit or other approval to take employment that has been issued by Work Permits UK; AND as well as above you should check and copy one of the following
  • A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder is able to stay in the UK and can take the work permit employment in question; OR
  • A letter issued by the Home Office to the holder confirming that the person named in it is able to stay in the UK and can take the work permit employment in question.
